Dr. Nicolas V. Christou

Dr. Christou received his B.Sc from McGill University in 1971, his MD in Medicine and Surgery in 1975, and his Ph.D. in Philosophy (Surgical Infections) in 1978.

He completed a surgical education at McGill University in 1980 and was appointed Professor of Surgery at McGill University and Royal Victoria Hospital in 1981. He worked at the McGill University Health Center (MUHC) as Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit from 1988 to 1995, was Director of the Division of General Surgery from 1995 to 2005, and Director of the Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery at the MUHC from 1995 to 2013. At the age of 65, he gave his PREM (government-approved public sector position) to a younger surgeon at McGill University. He will continue with his academic and research responsibilities at McGill University as Professor Emeritus of Surgery.

He is a member of many surgical societies, including the prestigious American Surgical Association, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Canadian Association of Physicians and Bariatric Surgeons, an association he has founded in part and which he was previously President.

Dr. Christou’s clinical research on bariatric surgery, particularly on laparoscopic isolated gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y), has inspired the global scientific community.
